Seriously. Really. I ran a new route today. Down hill some. I wanted to work on running faster. My time overall wasn't any faster 11.75 minutes per mile and my distance was only 2.7 miles and it was down hill the first 3/4 of a mile. My theory was this - down hill I could get into a better rhythm of a faster pace. On other parts I would increase my pace for good stretches then walk. Then run faster than my normal pace. The last 3/4 of a mile were slightly uphill and I know those were slower. I do feel like I pushed a little more. I need to find a flat route to work on speed. Take out the hill factors so that I'm not affected either up or down. Maybe I'll go down to the high school on Thursday.
Today was the first day that I've run since the 5K on Saturday. It's weird but having done that, my mind is like ok - you're done. You've set out to do what you wanted. Done. Ok mind. You really aren't in charge. That was just the first of many 5Ks. You aren't done. The body wants more - faster runs. Longer runs. Come on mind --- get on board.

  1. I remember after my first tri, I felt like, "what do I do now." You are signed up for another race, and your mind will get on board soon enough. As for speed, track work is a good way, if you want to measure performance. Do at least a 1/2 mile warm up, then run 2-3 400's. Walk between 400's for about the same time it took you to run, then run again. Try to do them all at the same speed. There are some pace calculators to tell you the speed you want to be shooting for. Make sure to cool down for at least 1/2 a mile at the end. Add a 400 each week. Then, once a week, do some hills a little faster. The way you worked the speed today is another great workout though. Good job. Don't forget one day a week to increase distance, a little at a time, and you will be at that 10k point sooner than you think.

  3. I wish 3rd would be awesome! I'm 28th in my age division and 25th in the Athena division. I was so happy to be in the middle of the group and not the end! Thanks for the support and interest. I really appreciate it. It's kind of hard to do it alone and I definitely don't feel alone! Thanks!
